Strain Measurements within Fibre Boards. Part II: Strain Concentrations at the Crack Tip of MDF Specimens Tested by the Wedge Splitting Method

چکیده
This is the second part of an article series where the mechanical and fracture mechanical properties of medium density fiberboard (MDF) were studied. While the first part of the series focused on internal bond strength and density profiles, this article discusses the fracture mechanical properties of the core layer. Fracture properties were studied with a wedge splitting setup. The critical stress intensity factors as well as the specific fracture energies were determined. Critical stress intensity factors were calculated from maximum splitting force and two-dimensional isotropic finite elements simulations of the specimen geometry. Size and shape of micro crack zone were measured with electronic laser speckle interferometry. The process zone length was approx. 5 mm. The specific fracture energy was determined to be 45.2 ± 14.4 J/m and the critical stress intensity factor was 0.11 ± 0.02 MPa.

Strain Measurements within Fibreboard. Part III: Analyzing the Process Zone at the Crack Tip of Medium Density Fiberboards (MDF) Double Cantilever I-Beam Specimens
This paper is the third part of a study dealing with the mechanical and fracture mechanical characterization of Medium Density Fiberboards (MDF). In the first part, an analysis of internal bond strength testing was performed and in the second part MDF was analyzed by means of the wedge splitting experiment; this part deals with the double cantilever I beam test, which is designed for measuring ...
متن کاملEffect of Deformed and Plain Rebars on the Behavior of Lightly Reinforced Boundary Elements
Failure modes in recent earthquakes on lightly reinforced shear walls includes rebar fracture and out of plane buckling of its boundary elements. In latest edition of ACI 318 and also latest amendment of NZS 3101-2006 to avoid rebar fracture in boundary elements, the minimum reinforcement ratio for shear walls is increased. This experimental study investigates that rather than increasing reinfo...
متن کاملThe Effect of Wedge Tip Angles on Stress Intensity Factors in the Contact Problem between Tilted Wedge and a Half Plane with an Edge Crack Using Digital Image Correlation
The first and second mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) of a contact problem between a half-plane with an edge crack and an asymmetric tilted wedge were obtained using experimental method of Digital Image Correlation (DIC). In this technique, displacement and strain fields can be measured using two digital images of the same sample at different stages of loading. However, several images were ...
متن کاملPrediction of Crack Initiation Direction for Inclined Crack Under Biaxial Loading by Finite Element Method
This paper presents a simple method based on strain energy density criterion to study the crack initiation angle by finite element method under biaxial loading condition. The crack surface relative displacement method is used to eliminate the calculation of the stress intensity factors which are normally required. The analysis is performed using higher order four node quadrilateral element. The...
متن کاملStress Intensity Factor Determination in Functionally Graded Materials, Considering Continuously Varying of Material Properties
In this paper, the plates made of functionally graded material (FGM) with and without a crack are numerically simulated, employing the finite element method (FEM). The material property variations are defined to be fully continuous; therefore, the elements can be as small as required. For this purpose, variations of the material properties are applied in both the integration points and in the n...
